Phrases

Which Phrases?

These are the short statements which appear on the left page of the book image at the top of Honestly Illustrated pages. There are many of them, and most of them need no explanation. A few of them are ambiguous, or just need more detail which I can't fit on that little image.

Everyone who should read this, won't.

I like to write about things which people who read often already know about, or should. We all write like that which we read. So I don't think that people who don't read much, will read this; but I wish they would.

Good fiction is seeded with reality. Believe in possibilities.

When preparing to tell a story, authors often investigate their subject. Particularly when writing good fiction. Occasionally, the names are changed to protect the innocent.

The lesson is not being taught. It is being learned.

A lesson is an activity, although the word, "lesson", is a noun which should describe a thing. So we think of "lessons" as objective things which exist in reality; almost like matter, but we can't see it or weigh it. Because the "lesson" is thought of as an object, we treat it like one.

Objects are made and then given to someone else, or used by the creator. If lessons are things which are made, and you only think about things which are made for you to buy, then you only have things which you bought.

When you, "learn your lesson", you have not been taught something. You were not, "taught your lesson", although the teacher may have said, "I will teach you a lesson". The question you are asked is, "have you learned your lesson?" The answer is always, "Yes, I have learned my lesson". So, your lesson has not been taught. Your lesson has been learned.

Learning is an activity, which you may do in reaction to someone teaching you.
